General Fraud Prevention Tips

Follow these tips to help protect yourself from fraud :

  • Make photocopies of vital information you carry regularly and store them in a secure place, such as a safety deposit box.
  • Shred documents containing personal or financial information before discarding. Most fraud and identity theft incidents happen as a result of mail and garbage theft.
  • Know your billing and statement cycles. Contact the company's customer service department if you stop receiving your regular bill or statement.
  • Sign the back of your card as soon as you receive it.
  • Report a lost or stolen card immediately.
  • Never carry your PIN in your wallet or write it on the back of your card and don't choose an obvious number for your PIN, such as your birth date or telephone number.
  • Keep a list of account numbers in a safe place along with corresponding customer service phone numbers and addresses. This information is very important if you need to report a problem immediately to your financial institutions.
  • Delete suspicious emails without opening them. If you do open a suspicious email, do not open any attachments or click on any links in the email.
  • Never log into your account through a link provided in an email, even if it looks like it is coming from a company you deal with regularly; instead, open a new browser and type the known Internet address in the address bar.
  • If you receive email from a known sender, do not launch an attachment without checking with the sender – even an email that appears to be from your computer manufacturer or a friend could be a fraudulent email containing a virus, Trojan horse, or worm.
  • Be selective when providing your email address to a questionable source; sharing your email address can make you more likely to receive fraudulent emails.
  • Only do business with companies you know and trust.
  • Only enter your credit card information on sites that have the "lock" icon at the bottom of the browser and "https" preceding the URL.
