Personal Banking

Credit card fraud occurs when the fraudster uses an unlawfully obtained credit card number to purchase goods, services, or access money.

Most credit card fraud involves lost or stolen cards. Credit card thieves do not need to have the credit card itself to do damage. All they need is a bill with your account number and expiration date. Think of your credit card number as a confidential piece of information that you need to guard vigilantly.

To reduce the chances that you will become a victim of credit card fraud, we recommend the following things to help keep your personal information and accounts safe:

  • When selecting a Personal Identification Number (PIN) do not use any number or word that appears in your wallet (such as name, birth date, or phone number)
  • Ensure no one sees your PIN when you enter it;
  • Memorize your Personal Identification Number (PIN) and do not write it on anything. It is not a good idea to use the last four digits of your taxpayer registration number (TRN), date of birth, address or numbers that may be easily obtained by identity thieves as your PIN;
  • Always log off from any website after a purchase transaction has been made with your credit card. If you cannot log off, shut down your browser to prevent unauthorized access to your account information;
  • Write down the toll-free numbers for reporting your credit cards lost or stolen and keep the number at home, in your purse or wallet and at your office so that you will be prepared to call immediately if you have to;
  • Always check that you get your card back after you make a purchase;
  • Ensure to sign your card in ink as soon as you receive it;
  • Shred all credit card receipts and pre-approved credit card offers into tiny pieces before you throw them away;
  • Keep your billing statements in a safe place;
  • When you use your credit card online, make sure you are using a secure web site. Look for a small key or lock symbol at the bottom right of your browser's window;
  • Report a lost or stolen card right away. Quick action will minimize potential loss and liability;
  • Monitor your statements monthly, making sure you recognize all charges. If you see any suspicious transactions, contact your bank immediately; and
  • Do not leave your purse, wallet, cards, or receipts unattended. Always keep them secure or in your sight. Only carry cards that you need; leave others in a safe place at home.

When using your card at an ABM:

  • Always be aware of your surroundings when withdrawing funds;
  • Never give out your ABM, or credit card PIN (Personal Identification Number);
  • Watch for suspicious persons or activity around the ABM. If you notice anything out of the ordinary, come back later or use an ABM elsewhere. If you observe suspicious persons or circumstances, do not use the ABM at that time. If you are in the middle of a transaction, cancel the transaction, take your card and leave the area, and come back at another time or use an ABM at another location;
  • Report lost or stolen checks or ABM cards, as soon as you discover they are missing;
  • Never allow a stranger to assist you with using an ABM;
  • When using a drive-thru ABM, keep your car doors locked and your engine running;
  • Ensure no one sees your PIN when you enter it;
  • Refrain from displaying cash, and put it away as soon as your transaction is completed. Wait to count your cash until you are in the safety of a locked enclosure, such as a car or home;
  • Take your receipts with you so potential criminals will not know how much you withdrew or how much money is in your account;
  • Always thoroughly review credit card and bank statements upon receipt. If there is suspicious activity on your account, notify the credit card company or bank immediately
